Children orphaned from living parents

Parents and educators have the greatest responsibility when it comes to stopping bullying. Training and wanting to be part of young people’s lives are essential ingredients.

Bullying is a problem that affects the whole world, and the Executive Director of the Global Organization for Bullying Prevention, Victor Alejandro Smoly, stated that after the pandemic, cases of bullying increased by 32 to 36%, added to the last figure recorded in 2019, which was 48%.

He mentioned that in Misiones there are an average of 2,200 educational institutions, and that of that number, there are two children who are on the verge of suicide because of this problem.

“If we take the number of 2,200 schools in Misiones and know that at least two children are thinking about suicide as the only way out of bullying, that means there are 4,400 children in Misiones who are currently thinking about ending their lives.” Victor Alejandro Smoly, Executive Director of the Global Organization for Bullying Prevention”

He also pointed out that their data is accurate, obtained through measurements taken in schools, training sessions, and reports received on their website.

At the national level, he estimated that 70% of children in Argentina suffer from bullying.

Another issue that was discussed was the role of teachers, how these authority figures can encourage it without meaning to or with full intent.

The director of Organización de Prevención said that since the foundation was established, around 25% of the reports they receive are against members of the teaching staff in both public and private schools, “we even receive letters from teachers exposing situations of bullying by other teachers.”

He also explained that the term bullying only applies when a minor harasses or intimidates another minor. When an adult engages in psychological or physical violence, it qualifies as assault.

“This happens because we have teachers who work by trade, since many of them do not have a vocation; they are trained but not qualified.” Victor Alejandro Smoly, Executive Director of the Global Organization for the Prevention of Bullying”

When asked how to solve bullying, the interviewee stated that it requires joint efforts with institutions such as the Ministry of Education and the General Council of Education, as well as with parents, administrators, and teachers, so that they know how to act correctly and assist both children, the victim and the perpetrator.

He added that he would propose the creation of a ministry for the prevention of bullying, as a measure to tackle the root of the problem and promote collective awareness.
